Représentation :
Il est représenté le plus souvent par un chacal noir ou un homme à tête de chacal. Son nom veut dire "chacal". Il est souvent couché sur une maquette de chapelle funéraire ou sur un naos, avec un bandeau rouge autour du cou et un fouet entre les pattes postérieures. Il avait également souvent une croix ankh dans une main et dans l’autre le sceptre.
Biographie :
Il est le dieu égyptien des morts. Son rôle principal était de veiller à l'embaumement et à l'accompagnement des morts vers le royaume éternel. C'est lui qui emmène le défunt dans la chambre des Deux Vérités afin qu'il subisse l'épreuve de la pesée. Il est d'ailleurs le président de cette cérémonie.
Son sanctuaire principal était situé dans la nécropole à Memphis mais aussi à Cynopolis. Il serait le fils d'Osiris et de Nephthys qui se serait fait passer pour Isis.
